While I agree that using www.airmagnet.com and even using Motorola LAN Planner, (predictive modeling), are some of the finest tools in the industry, they are only one part of the equation. The second part is understanding the behavior of clients on the network. For instance, how do you really know if you have enough bandwidth for 200 WLAN enabled patient monitors (which do not eat up a lot of bandwidth), but then add 70 VoIP phones, along with 100 laptops? It has been somewhat a trial and error method, add more and more capacity. It is felt that using WaveDeploy, (former Veriwave), now IxiaCom, should be the gold standard for capacity testing. I also would say in light of IEC 80001 that every IT/CIO that will intend to deploy WLAN enabled medical devices should use this tool to validate the integrity and quality of service of their network. Sounds like I am a paid advertisement for WaveDeploy…I am not! I just know the headaches that a product like this can solve. Been there and done that as they say.
