Theres is renewed talk recently about the safety of wireless devices operating in hospitals or around the point of care. A recent study by the University of Amsterdam researchers raised concerns about RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) causing disruptions to sensitive medical devices. This follows the similiar EMI concern about the use of cellular devices.  However the Mayo Clinic conducted their own study and came to the conclusion that the use model of usin cellular devices far outweighs any potential EMI issue. Most people to use their cell phone within 4 inches of a patient monitor.  Same will weigh in regarding RFID.  The use model to improve workflow, provide automated association and disassocation throughout the continium of care is where the applicaition of RFID will become the driver.  Until empirical and statistical studies that quantify any potential of risk, or or providing a use model in the clinical domain, this "talk", is merely opinion and/or a hypothesis.
