The MobileAccess VE a converged cellular and WiFi solution, has additionally completed interoperability testing with the Cisco Unified Wireless Network portfolio of 802.11a/b/g/n access points and controllers. The MobileAccess "dual-band" solution provides in-building coverage for two bands of cellular service in enterprise environments. Supported service combinations include PCS/Cell, UMTS/DCS and UMTS/EGSM. MobileAccess VE enables the use of existing or new CAT-5e/6 cabling in support of RF coverage. The VE control unit (VCU) interfaces with the service providers RF capacity source and the VE Access Pods (APs). In the equipment room, the VCU can optionally combine cellular and Ethernet Services on on CAT-5e/6 for distribution to the AP(s). When more than one VE Control Unit (VCU) is required (for multiple floors), a VCU can be used as a Hub unit to aggregate up to 12 additional VCU(s) for interface with a capacity source. VCU to VCU connection must be via CAT6/7 shielded twisted pair(STP). Maximum distance between VCU to VCU or VCU to AP is 100 meters (328 ft.) While I think that this is a pretty interesting solution, it is still my opinion that in lot of instances for healthcare the WLAN should be separate from the DAS. Some questions are the following: Support of two carriers, ATT/Verizon, what about Sprint and/or T-Mobile? How will public safety coverage at 800MHz as well as 700MHz be supported if required by jurisdictions? It supports 700MHz LTE, though. While the link budget dictates the design of a fiber fed coaxial infrastructure, here now we also have the limitation of 100 meters due to the use of CAT-5e/6 cabling. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Definitely tells me that that the market is converging. The off load of the data and 3G/4G network traffic onto WiFi via dual mode smart phones (the I-Phone) is leading the charge. Cisco has quietly now moved into the DAS world.

The VE Unit weight is around 8.73 pounds, pretty hefty! List cost around $990. VCU list around $6000.

Hey,
Thanks! Great post you have written on “MobileAccess Joins the Cisco Developer Network as a Registered Developer”. Really I can say that your post is very informative, I’ll come across your blog again when you will update it with new.
Thanks,
