Major advances will continue to push the value proposition of Bluetooth (R) in 2016. The physical range of Bluetooth will be increased by a factor of four, data rates will be doubled, and mesh networking will be introduced. Introducing mesh networking will definitely be a competitive challenge for any type of previous mesh enabled low power solutions in the enterprise. On March 15, 2016 the Bluetooth SIG announced the availability of the TDS (Transport Discovery Service). TDS provides the wireless industry with a common framework for devices to discover and connect, irregardless of the wireless technologies that are present. Classic Bluetooth or BR/EDR still has it’s place, but Bluetooth Low Energy or BLE has been adopted in virtually all the mobile devices. Once this occurred, it confirmed BLE is the standard in the industry. TDS also solves a major problem for the Internet of Things (Iot) by making it possible for devices to remain available while consuming minimal power. Look to see all the major WLAN providers just incorporate BLE into their AP(s). Standard proprietary RTLS will more than likely be displaced by BLE.
