Once folks have had the smart phone and the iPad then this has somewhat become the displacement for the desktop. It is the technology evolution to mobility that has made this happen.

In light of this; how do you feed the current bandwidth and deployment requirements of 802.11n, (here now) and now 802.11ac coming out to be ratified the end of 2013? Oh yes how do you ensure 4G provides the speed and capacity over the legacy infrastructure? All this discussion is about the bandwidth capacity and getting the “pipe” needed to the end device (smart phone and I-Pad) and through the network as we currently know it through our legacy space. Temper this of the massive efforts that are being made to migrate to 4G.

Some questions should be looked at.

Do we continue to invest in Gigabit Ethernet as the back haul?
– Where does coaxial cable fit into this picture in the future?

I believe fiber has become so cost effective to implement that it is the logical choice for the current and next generation networking. Where else could have the unlimited “pipe” to feed the huge bandwidth demand. Exciting things are happening in this space and much more will be shared in the weeks ahead. If I can have fiber to my home, then why should not each healthcare system have this to the end point?

Enjoy HIMSS 2013 in New Orleans in a week. Integra Systems, Inc. meeting schedule is becoming booked. It is our 16th year attending.
